Pregnancy Massage
What is pregnancy massage (prenatal massage)?
Pregnancy massage (also known as prenatal massage) is a form of massage therapy specifically tailored for pregnant women and pregnancy-related conditions such as pelvic pain and swelling.
What does treatment involve?
Every pregnancy is unique and, as pregnancy progresses, a woman’s body is constantly evolving both physically and psychologically. Massage techniques are therefore customised to the patient, to the stage of her pregnancy, to her complaint and her goals.
Pregnancy massage therapists are trained to adapt their treatment to the needs of the mum to be and her baby, with a focus on comfort and positioning. Various positions are used that allow the therapist easily to access the full body while keeping the client comfortable and maintaining her modesty. Additional aids, such as pregnancy pillows, yoga balls, pillows, towels and blankets may be used as necessary.
What are the benefits?
Pregnancy massage is a safe and effective treatment for many common discomforts of pregnancy such as backache, neck stiffness, leg cramps and headache. In addition, pregnancy massage can encourage blood and lymph circulation, reducing swelling.
Other benefits include reduced tension, improved sleep and for some women an easier labour. On a psychological level, massage has been shown to reduce stress and improve symptoms of depression during pregnancy.
Who is it for?
Massage is recommended for expectant mothers from the end of the first trimester onwards, usually after the first scan which is undertaken at 12 to 14 weeks. It is important to be aware that, in some instances, there may be contraindications which can limit treatment – this will be discussed during a consultation before treatment begins.
Is it safe?
Yes. Pregnancy massage is extremely safe at any time during pregnancy, however we advise deferring treatment until the end of the 1st trimester.
